Greetings!
Thank you. Thank you for all the ways you make Decorah Lutheran Church the place it is. Your faithful response to God’s love in Jesus Christ and your desire to spread that good news is a powerful testimony. A testimony to your desire to follow the commission of Jesus to “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age. (Matt. 28:19-20)"
Decorah Lutheran has been a mission center now for almost 150 years! Decorah Lutheran has focused heavily on the mission of educating and making disciples. It struck me that when the congregation made the decision to build back in the 1950’s they chose to build an educational facility first. They could have built anything first, but education and ministry to youth and families came first. That was a bold statement back then and it continues to hold true today.
Think of the number of people who over the years received their Christian education at Decorah Lutheran Church. Think of how that has impacted this community and world in which we live. So many youth and adults raised in the faith sent into this world as signs of the risen Christ. And now it is our time to continue the legacy of faithful witness that God planted here so long ago.
This is the month that so many people celebrate the fruits of teaching and learning. Graduates will be receiving their diplomas and looking to the future. We celebrate with them as a community of faith. And we give thanks to God for the gifts of teaching and learning. We know them well here. They are fruits of the Spirit alive in our midst.
Through us God is impacting people’s lives and this world we call home. Let us remain committed to this important mission as learners and teachers ourselves; and as we give our offerings and tithes; our days and years; our talents and gifts to support these essential parts of the Great Commission of Christ here at Decorah Lutheran Church. Thanks be to God!
In Christ’s love,
Pastor Dave Sorenson
