Finally the weather is warmer! Seedlings are up and the first roses of spring are starting to open. And, here at Decorah Lutheran Church, ministry is blooming this summer. We are now part of an awesome ministry that gets meals to hungry children right here in Decorah! The "Kids Lunch Club" is springing to action even as I write this.
A group of local congregations - DLC, First Lutheran, Decorah Congregational UCC, Good Shepherd Lutheran, United Methodist Church plus Thrivent Financial with guidance from the Park and Recreation Board here in town - have put together an 11 week program for providing fresh sack lunches five days each week for kids!
We will not turn any child away. We are estimating at least 75 children, based on the numbers of children currently receiving free and reduced lunches in our school district. We want to be sure these 75 little ones are not going hungry on summer days. But we will not turn away any child who lines up for a sack lunch at distribution time. This is because Jesus tells us that when we serve the "least of these" we are serving him.
Here at DLC, we will receive a noisy offering and other contributions, so everyone will have an opportunity to participate in this small but important ministry. We will also be distributing lunches at the John Cline School for a couple of weeks this summer. This volunteer time commitment is only one hour and fifteen minutes at lunch time. The sign up sheet is located in the Narthex at the back of the sanctuary or you may sign up via Volunteer Spot here. Consider this your personal invitation to join us in volunteering time, donating change, and praying for these efforts. Especially the prayers!!
Blessings, Pastor Charis
